When a buyer sends an incomplete request to a custom stainless steel mesh supplier, the result is often a wrong quotation, repeated questions, delayed samples, or a mesh that fails during production. A clear RFQ solves these problems by defining the required custom woven wire mesh specification, application conditions, inspection method, and delivery requirements before pricing begins. This guide explains how to write an RFQ for custom stainless steel wire mesh and how to describe stainless steel mesh for filtration, screening, guarding, or decoration so that a supplier can quote accurately on the first review.
Wire mesh is not identified by material grade alone. Two products made from stainless steel 304 can have different mesh counts, wire diameters, opening sizes, weave patterns, edge treatments, and dimensional tolerances. These differences affect open area, pressure drop, filtration performance, tensile behavior, and price.
For example, a specification of "304 stainless steel mesh, 100 mesh" is incomplete. The buyer should also state whether the product follows a woven wire cloth standard, the target wire diameter, the required aperture, the roll or sheet size, and the acceptable tolerance. A supplier may otherwise select a commercially available combination that does not suit the equipment.
According to ASTM E2016, Standard Terminology for Industrial Woven Wire Cloth, woven wire cloth is described using terms such as mesh, wire diameter, opening, and weave. ISO 9044 also defines technical requirements and test methods for industrial woven wire cloth. Using these recognized terms reduces the risk that the buyer and supplier interpret the same description differently.
Stainless steel grade affects corrosion resistance, temperature suitability, magnetic response, weldability, and cost. A supplier cannot recommend the correct wire unless the RFQ identifies the operating environment or gives permission for a material alternative.
Use 304 or 304L when the environment is generally mild and the application does not involve high chloride exposure. Consider 316 or 316L when the mesh will face marine conditions, chloride-bearing process liquids, or repeated exposure to corrosive cleaning agents. This is not a universal rule: the final choice should be checked against the actual chemical concentration, temperature, exposure time, and cleaning process.
For food, pharmaceutical, or laboratory applications, state the cleaning process and contact requirements instead of simply writing "food grade." The phrase alone does not define a complete legal or technical requirement.
RFQ example: "Supply woven stainless steel wire cloth in ASTM 316L or EN 1.4404, with a material certificate showing chemical composition. The mesh will be used for a chloride-containing liquid at 60 degrees C. No carbon steel handling tools may contact the product."
Mesh count describes the approximate number of openings per linear inch, but it does not independently identify the product. The same mesh count can be manufactured with different wire diameters, producing different aperture sizes and open areas. For filtration and flow applications, the opening size and open area are usually more important than mesh count alone.
For a plain weave, buyers may use the approximate relationship between pitch, wire diameter, and opening as an initial check: pitch equals opening plus wire diameter. Mesh count is related to pitch, but actual values depend on manufacturing tolerances and the selected wire combination. The supplier should confirm the final combination using the applicable wire cloth standard rather than relying on a rough calculation.
ASTM E11 covers woven wire test sieve cloth and related sieve requirements, while ISO 4783 provides guidance on the selection of wire mesh combinations for industrial screens. These standards are useful references when the RFQ concerns particle separation or laboratory screening. They do not automatically define every requirement for an industrial filter, so the buyer should still provide the process data.
RFQ example: "Plain weave, nominal 60 mesh, 0.19 mm wire diameter, target aperture approximately 0.234 mm, stainless steel 316L. Quote the available standard combination and identify any difference between the target aperture and the offered aperture."
Use this level of detail for filtration, sieving, powder classification, and airflow control. If the buyer does not know the required aperture, provide the particle size range, retention target, flow rate, and acceptable pressure drop so the supplier can recommend a mesh.
The weave controls how wires intersect and influences aperture shape, surface profile, strength, flexibility, and cleaning behavior. A plain weave is commonly used for general filtration and screening. A twill weave can support finer openings with relatively heavier wire. A Dutch weave uses different wire arrangements and is often selected for filtration applications where retention and mechanical strength are important.
Do not ask for "high-strength mesh" without describing the load. State whether the mesh will experience vibration, impact, tension, abrasion, pressure, or repeated cleaning. For a screen panel, provide the support frame, span, load, and fixing method. For a filter element, provide flow direction and differential pressure.
RFQ example: "Use plain weave for a removable filter disc. The disc will be supported around its full circumference and exposed to a maximum differential pressure of 0.3 MPa. Supplier shall state whether a twill or Dutch weave is technically preferable."
This approach is suitable for buyers who know the application but are unsure about the best weave. It gives the manufacturer enough information to propose a practical stainless steel wire mesh solution instead of making an unsupported assumption.
A mesh roll, cut sheet, punched disc, welded assembly, and framed panel require different tooling, labor, packaging, and inspection. A supplier can quote more accurately when the RFQ includes a dimensioned drawing and clear pictures. Pictures are especially useful for showing existing mounting points, edge folds, seams, clips, and damaged components that need replacement.
For a circular filter disc, state the outside diameter, inside diameter if there is a ring, mesh orientation, edge construction, and permitted burr height. For a framed screen, state the frame material, weld type, corner construction, and whether the frame must be supplied assembled.
When using the brand shunqiang as a source or reference in an internal purchasing document, identify the exact product code, revision, and drawing number. A brand name without a part number is not a complete technical description.
RFQ example: "Supply 500 round filter discs, 316L plain weave, 85 mm outside diameter, 0.5 mm maximum cut burr, laser cut or equivalent, with the mesh welded into a 1.5 mm thick 316L retaining ring. Refer to drawing SQ-FD-085 Rev B and attached installation pictures."
Terms such as "excellent filtration," "strong mesh," and "smooth finish" are difficult to inspect. A good RFQ replaces these descriptions with measurable values and a defined inspection method.
For filtration, provide the required particle retention range, flow rate, fluid viscosity, temperature, pressure, and allowable pressure drop. Mesh opening alone does not guarantee a specific filtration rating because particle shape, process conditions, filter construction, and test method also affect performance.
For screening, state the material being screened, particle size distribution, feed rate, vibration conditions, and expected service life. For architectural or guarding applications, state the design load, panel span, fixing points, and appearance grade.
ISO 9044 is a useful reference for industrial woven wire cloth requirements and tests. ASTM E11 is relevant when the product is used as test sieve cloth. When the product is a pressure-bearing filter assembly or a welded structural screen, additional engineering and safety requirements may apply.
RFQ example: "Supplier shall inspect wire diameter and aperture using calibrated optical or mechanical equipment. Provide a dimensional inspection report for the first article. No broken wires are permitted in the active filtration area. Parts shall be cleaned, dried, individually protected, and packed to prevent edge deformation."
Tooling, setup, minimum order quantity, material purchasing, cutting, welding, inspection, and packaging can change the unit price substantially. A quotation is more useful when the supplier knows whether the buyer needs a prototype, a pilot batch, or recurring production.
Use an annual forecast when the mesh will be purchased repeatedly. A supplier may offer a different manufacturing route for 10 prototype pieces than for 10,000 production pieces. Asking for both options helps the buyer compare total cost rather than only the first unit price.
RFQ example: "Prototype quantity: 10 pieces. Initial production quantity: 500 pieces. Forecast annual demand: 4,000 pieces in four releases. Quote tooling, sample, unit, packaging, and freight charges separately. Provide sample lead time and production lead time from drawing approval."

This can result in multiple possible aperture sizes and different open areas. Always request both mesh count and wire diameter, or state the target aperture and let the supplier propose a standard combination.
Material selection depends on chemicals, temperature, cleaning, and exposure time. A grade recommendation based only on the product name may not account for chloride, acid, or alkaline conditions.
A picture shows shape and installation context but does not establish scale or tolerance. Add a dimensioned drawing, marked-up image, or sample measurement sheet.
Plain, twill, Dutch, and crimped constructions can produce different performance. If the buyer does not know the correct weave, provide the operating data and ask for a technical recommendation.
Replace "smooth," "durable," and "high quality" with measurable requirements such as maximum burr height, material certificate type, wire diameter tolerance, open area, pressure limit, or inspection method.
A strong RFQ does not need to be long, but it must remove technical ambiguity. For a simple standard roll, material, mesh count, wire diameter, weave, roll size, quantity, and delivery information may be enough. For a filter disc, framed panel, or pressure-loaded screen, add drawings, pictures, operating data, edge construction, and acceptance tests. When these details are included, shunqiang or any qualified supplier can evaluate the same requirements, recommend a suitable custom woven wire mesh specification, and provide a quotation that is easier to compare and approve.
