These sizes represent the current listed SS201 product range. The complete specification should still include wire diameter and finished dimensions.
SS201 is generally considered when the project needs stainless steel welded construction but purchasing cost remains an important decision factor.
It is better suited to applications where the environment is relatively dry or moderate and the mesh will not experience persistent salt, chloride, aggressive chemicals or severe washdown conditions.
Typical decision factors include:
indoor or relatively protected installation;
moderate humidity exposure;
cost-sensitive cages, racks, partitions and protective structures;
applications where the corrosion margin required from SS304 is not necessary.
Do not treat SS201 as an automatic lower-cost substitute for SS304.
If the mesh will operate outdoors for long periods, remain wet, undergo repeated chemical cleaning or experience salt or chloride exposure, compare SS201 with SS304 before confirming the material.
Opening determines what the welded grid must contain, separate or allow through.
Smaller openings provide closer spacing but reduce the available open area.
Larger openings improve airflow and visibility but may no longer provide sufficient containment or protection for the application.
Start with the required function rather than choosing the most common opening size.
For example:
a cage should start from what must be contained;
a machine guard should start from the required separation distance and access restriction;
shelving should consider the size of items being supported;
a partition may prioritize visibility and airflow together with rigidity.
Opening and wire diameter must be selected together.
A thicker wire generally:
