Choose the Right Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Product

Stainless Steel Welded Wire Mesh

Welded wire mesh uses wires joined at each intersection to create a stable square or rectangular grid. Compared with a woven structure, welded mesh retains its shape more effectively after cutting and is commonly selected where dimensional stability, rigidity and defined openings are important.

Our welded wire mesh range includes dedicated SS201 and SS304 product categories with multiple opening and wire-diameter combinations.

Best suited for: protective mesh, cages and enclosures, equipment guards, partitions, general industrial fabrication and applications requiring a stable welded grid.

SS304 Welded Wire Mesh

SS304 welded wire mesh provides a stronger balance of corrosion resistance, durability and general industrial usability. It is commonly considered where stainless steel mesh is exposed to moisture, repeated cleaning or more demanding service conditions.

For example, one current 1/2" SS304 welded mesh specification is offered with several wire diameters and roll widths. This illustrates an important purchasing point: two products with the same 1/2" opening can have significantly different weight, stiffness and cost depending on the wire diameter.

SS201 Welded Wire Mesh

SS201 welded wire mesh is an economical option for applications where cost control is important and the service environment is relatively moderate.

Current product listings include opening sizes such as 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" and 1". The correct specification should still be selected according to wire diameter, finished dimensions and exposure conditions rather than opening size alone.

For humid, frequently washed or more corrosive environments, compare SS201 with SS304 before finalizing the material.

Stainless Steel Welded Wire Mesh Panels

Welded wire mesh panels are the better choice when the application requires a flat, rigid piece rather than a continuous roll. They are commonly used for machine guarding, framed partitions, enclosures, racks, protective structures and fabrication projects.

Site-listed panel materials include SS201, SS302, SS304 and SS316, with a stated wire-diameter range of 2.0–5.0 mm and openings from 1/2" to 6". Length, width and finished size can be adjusted according to project requirements.

Choose a panel when maintaining shape and installation dimensions is more important than having a long continuous roll.

How to Select Stainless Steel Wire Mesh

A useful specification normally combines four decisions:

material grade + opening size + wire diameter + supply form

Leaving any one of these undefined can change product performance and quotation.

Choose the Material Grade by Service Environment

Material Selection Logic Typical Purchasing Consideration
SS201 Suitable where cost control is important and corrosion exposure is relatively moderate Check humidity, cleaning conditions and outdoor exposure before selecting primarily on price
SS304 General-purpose stainless steel grade for many industrial, protective and fabrication applications Often selected when better corrosion resistance and long-term service are required
SS316 Consider for chloride, coastal, salt-bearing or more aggressive process environments Confirm the required specification and current availability when corrosion resistance is the main design factor
Other listed grades Select according to the actual engineering requirement Confirm grade, dimensions and processing requirements before quotation

Do not choose stainless steel grade only by initial material cost. The operating environment, cleaning method, expected service life and replacement difficulty may justify a different grade.

Specify Opening and Wire Diameter Together

For welded wire mesh, opening and wire diameter must be considered as a pair.

A smaller opening can provide tighter containment or screening, while a thicker wire generally increases rigidity, metal weight and structural stability. Increasing wire diameter also reduces the clear open area when the opening layout remains similar.

For example:

  • Small opening + relatively thin wire: useful where finer spacing matters but excessive weight or rigidity is unnecessary.

  • Small opening + thicker wire: selected when tighter spacing must also provide greater stiffness.

  • Large opening + thicker wire: commonly considered for guards, enclosures and structural panel applications where airflow or visibility is still required.

  • Large opening + thin wire: may reduce weight but should not be selected without considering deformation and handling requirements.

For an accurate quotation, avoid sending only “1/2 inch mesh” or “50 mm mesh.” Include the wire diameter as well.

Choose Roll or Panel Supply Form

Supply Form When It Makes Sense Parameters to Confirm
Welded Mesh Roll Long continuous installations, flexible cutting plans and projects requiring multiple cut lengths Grade, opening, wire diameter, roll width, roll length and quantity
Welded Mesh Panel Machine guards, partitions, framed structures, cages, racks and fabricated assemblies Grade, opening, wire diameter, panel width, panel length and required processing
Cut or Fabricated Piece Projects requiring specific finished dimensions or shapes Drawing or finished dimensions, cut shape, bending requirements, edge condition and quantity
Stainless Steel Wire / Straight Bar Downstream mesh production or metal fabrication Grade, diameter, form, length and quantity

Do not treat a roll and a rigid panel as interchangeable simply because the opening and wire diameter are the same. Packaging, installation, handling and fabrication requirements are different.

Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Selection by Application

The correct mesh depends on what the opening must control and what mechanical or environmental conditions the mesh must withstand.

Application What to Prioritize Why
Machine guards and safety partitions Wire diameter, panel rigidity, opening and finished panel dimensions The mesh must maintain its shape while providing the required visibility and separation
Animal cages and enclosures Opening, wire diameter, grade and edge condition Opening controls containment while wire diameter affects rigidity and resistance to deformation
Food-handling or carrying equipment Stainless grade, cleanability, opening and fabrication details Material exposure, cleaning conditions and product-contact requirements should be reviewed before selecting the grade
Industrial screening or coarse filtration support Opening, wire diameter and process conditions Welded mesh is useful where a stable support or coarse screen is needed
Construction protection Panel or roll format, wire diameter, opening and installation dimensions Installation method and required rigidity usually determine whether a roll or panel is more suitable
Automotive or fabricated protection components Finished shape, dimensions, cutting/bending requirement and grade Fabrication compatibility may be as important as the basic mesh specification

Important: welded wire mesh should not automatically be selected for micron-level filtration. If your process requires very fine particle retention, a woven or specialized filter mesh structure may be more appropriate. Confirm the filtration requirement before selecting solely by opening size.

Custom Processing and Specification Options

A custom stainless steel wire mesh order should define the parameters that actually affect the finished product.

Depending on the product and project, relevant customization can include:

  • Stainless steel grade

  • Opening size

  • Wire diameter

  • Roll width and length

  • Panel width and length

  • Cut-to-size dimensions

  • Cutting and bending

  • Fabricated shapes

  • Required quantity and packaging configuration

SHUNQIANG's site describes automated welding for stainless steel welded mesh as well as cutting and bending capabilities for finished mesh products. For parts requiring a specific finished shape, provide a drawing or clearly marked dimensions so the processing requirement can be reviewed together with the base mesh specification.

FAQ

Should I choose SS201 or SS304 welded wire mesh?

Use the service environment as the first decision factor. SS201 can be considered for cost-sensitive applications with relatively moderate corrosion exposure. SS304 is generally preferred where better corrosion resistance is required. If the application involves salt, chloride or more aggressive process conditions, discuss a more corrosion-resistant grade before ordering.

Why do you need both opening size and wire diameter?

Opening controls the spacing of the mesh, while wire diameter affects rigidity, weight, open area and material consumption. Two meshes with the same opening can therefore perform very differently if their wire diameters are different.

What is the difference between welded wire mesh rolls and panels?

Rolls are useful where long continuous material and flexible cutting are required. Panels are more suitable where flatness, rigidity and fixed installation dimensions are important.

Can I request a non-standard opening or finished size?

Custom dimensions can be reviewed according to the material, wire diameter, mesh structure and processing requirements. Send a drawing for complex finished shapes or fabricated components.

Is welded wire mesh suitable for filtration?

It can be used for coarse screening, support and some industrial filtration-related applications. However, fine or micron-level filtration often requires woven or specialized filter mesh. State the required retention or particle size before selecting the mesh.

What is the MOQ?

Standard welded mesh: 10 rolls.MOQ can depend on the specification, material, dimensions and whether the requested product is a standard or customized item. Include the required quantity in the RFQ so the applicable order requirement can be confirmed.
